RUNNING AWAY FROM OUR PROTECTOR

Yesterday I was doing a lot of driving around - going to garage sales, running errands, getting my haircut - just normal Saturday routine. But it seemed like everywhere I went I would see this beautiful dog. She was a golden colored, probably was part golden retriever, and fairly big. The first time I saw her yesterday was when I was passing by the Rail Trail. I thought she just was walking ahead of her master and didn't think much about it. Then about an hour later I saw her again - all alone - walking down a very curvy, dangerous street. I was so frightened for her. She looked like she was trying to find something to eat. She was grabbing at things on the ground. I pulled over and called my daughter and told her to look up somewhere we could take her if I could get her to come to me. I could tell she did not have on a collar so there was no way I could call her owner. I got out of the car and got a closer look at her. It was obvious she had had puppies recently. I tried to go up to her but she ran off. She would not let me anywhere near her. She ran around the corner and I heard a car blare its horn. I just wanted to cry. I just knew that she had been hit. But when I drove around the corner, she was nowhere to be found. I drove home in tears, I was so worried about her.

About 30 minutes later, my daughter and I were getting back into my car at my house to go get something to eat. My daughter was backing out and all of the sudden stopped and shouted "Mom, is that the dog you were trying to help?" I looked out my window and saw her!! I couldn't believe she had made it to my house, which was probably about 3 miles from where I last saw her. I jumped out and we once again tried to get her to come to us and, once again, she took off running with her tail between her legs. I couldn't believe it! All I was doing was trying to keep this dog safe!!

We got back into the car and started to pull out of our complex. All of the sudden we heard brakes squeal and looked up and there she was again! Just slowly walking across the street, right in front of a car! Although she was terrified of people, this dog seemed to have no fear of cars!

Once again, we took off after the dog. We saw her on the street next to ours and got out of the car and tried to get her to come to us again! Bet you can guess what happened!! She ran off again and once again towards a busy street!! There was nothing we could do and we drove off in tears. I was so worried about her and worried about her puppies that were probably missing their mommy, but I just didn't know what else to do. It was a horrible feeling.

Later on last night I started thinking about the situation again and I realized that this dog's behavior is similar to our own behavior sometimes. When God tries to lead us in the right direction, we run off and try to do things all on our own. We think we don't need Him, that we can take care of ourselves. And sometimes we are so afraid of how much we do need Him that we just don't want to admit it and we run and hide! But when we choose to ignore God or to run away from Him, all we are doing is running into traffic ourselves! We need Him to protect us from the "traffic" that we run into! We need His protection and His love and His grace!

Thank you, Lord, for being our protector! Thank you for watching out over us. Help us not to run from you, Lord, but to run TO you!

You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance. Psalm 32:7

FALLING IN LOVE

Falling in love is such a wonderful feeling! And watching your child fall in love and start planning their future is even better! The sparkle in their eyes, the joy in their heart - it is all so wonderful to watch!

As much as I am enjoying this phase of my daughter's life, I look back on all of her young life and how I have cautioned her to be very careful who she dated because she never knew who she might actually fall in love with and she should make sure that if she did fall in love with someone, he would be the right one - in her eyes and in God's eyes. I do believe she has found the right one and while they may not do everything that this mother thinks they should, what child does? I think they are perfect together. She always worried that she would never find someone but I always told her that once she found the "right" one, she would just know.

Isn't that how is is with our relationship with Jesus? Once we look into his wonderful face, how can we not be captivated by his beauty? When we compare him to others, there is no comparison! Once we have seen Jesus for who he is, all the other things of this world pale in comparison. Money, fame, power - they may all be nice things to have but nothing compares to the love of Jesus and the relationship we may have with him!

Don't fall in love with the first thing that catches your attention. Get to know Jesus and develop a deep relationship with him. When you do, all other earthly things will pale in comparison!

Then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Philippians 2:2

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!!

Happy Father's Day to all of you fathers out there. This is kind of a sad day for me. My dad passed away two years ago and I still miss him terribly. But when I think about it, I always have him with me. I have a lot of my dad's traits which is really interesting because he was not my biological father. But he was my Dad. And he influenced my life more than he will ever know. I have tried so hard to be the kind of daughter that he would be proud of.

One of the biggest ways my Dad influenced my life was in the way he showed his faith and, more importantly, lived his faith. He was a true Christian man and one that I was proud to call my Dad.

But even though my earthly father is no longer here, I know that my heavenly Father is always with me. He walks beside me every day, through good times and bad. And when I feel like I can't walk anymore, He carries me. He never leaves me. I can celebrate everyday because I have a Father in heaven!!

Thank you, Lord, for the dad You gave me. Thank you, Lord, for being my heavenly Father. I am so grateful that because of your love that one day I will be with You and my dad and mom again!

Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the Lord your God is giving you. Deuteronomy 5:16

KEEPING THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE

Have you heard the story of the young college student who wrote her parents a letter telling them of her new boyfriend? She told them that he had dropped out of college in his junior year to marry his girlfriend but they had divorced about a year ago. She told them that they had been dating for several months and that she had dropped out of college so she could marry him.

On the next page of the letter, the young student told her parents that everything she had told them on the first page of the letter was false. She had, however, failed one of her classes in school!

It was obvious in this letter that this young girl was trying to make her parents keep the fact that she had failed a class in perspective. We should all do that in life. We complain and feel sorry for ourselves and the problems we have. In reality, there are others who would change places with us anytime!! That is not to say that we don't have problems and that there aren't times that we struggle with things in life. But we should keep things in perspective and thank God for the blessings that He has given us!

Thank you, Lord, for the blessings You have given us. Help us to remember our blessings and to keep our problems in perspective. Help us to remember that our struggles can help us grow stronger if we keep our faith and trust in You.

Many, O Lord My God, are the wonders You have done. The things you planned for us no one can recount to you; were I to speak and tell of them, they would be too many to declare. Psalm 40:5

ONE MAN'S TRASH IS ANOTHER MAN'S TREASURE

We have all heard the saying that "One man's trash is another man's treasure". I am finding this more and more to be true as I am starting a new business - an online flea market. I have gone around to different garage sales, flea markets, thrift stores to find items to put on my new website. It is amazing the items that you can find - some are fantastic! I don't think some people realize what they have! And others make you wonder "What were they thinking when they bought that? That is junk!" But I have actually purchased some of this junk and turned it into something wonderful for my home or to sell. You just never know what you could do when you turn your mind to it.

Sometimes we feel like we are junk in God's eyes. We make mistakes. We sin. How could God possibly love us and our junk? But everyday, He takes rebellious sinners and transforms them by His power into something beautiful and valuable!!

Before you give up on yourself or someone else, before you get too discouraged about how your life has turned out, always remember that you have the potential in the hands of God to be turned into something wonderful and valuable!!

He who pursues righteousness and love finds life, prosperity and honor.

HELP ME TO FORGIVE AND BE GRATEFUL

I am so frustrated and angry. I live in a condominium complex and we have a communal laundry room. Everyone has their own washer and dryer but they are all in one room. I have lived here for over two years, have grown to love it, and love the neighbors that I know.

Well, I went to do my laundry this morning and someone had stolen the empty laundry basket that was on my washer, all of my fabric softener and fabric softener sheets, and one bottle of detergent. They were kind enough to leave one bottle of detergent. I was so angry. I know it doesn't seem like much but I save every penny I can and laundry supplies are not cheap. But more importantly, it was a horrible feeling to know that someone stole from me.

Of course, I got all in a dither and decided that I was moving! It didn't matter that my home is perfect for me - the right size, the right location, the right price, and, for the most part, great neighbors. I didn't care - I was moving!!

I went outside to sit on my porch and read the paper (the real estate ads!). I have worked hard to make my patio look nice - put lots of plants out, got new chairs, and hung my bird feeder. I love to watch the birds come up to the bird feeder. They will actually come up to it and eat even while I am sitting right there on the porch. It makes me happy to watch them and always puts a smile on my face!

Well, while I was out there steaming about my laundry supplies and looking through the ads, I looked up and there were several birds on the feeder and several more actually walking around my porch. I put the ads down and watched the birds. I began thinking about how grateful I am for my home, how much I truly like it, how perfect it is for me, and how easy it would be to just put my laundry supplies away where no one can get them. My problem would be solved and I am still happy in my home.

God has so truly blessed me with my home and everything in my life. I am so grateful that He opened my eyes on this situation - instead of continuing to be angry and frustrated, He gave me a solution and a peace about the situation. Although I have to admit, I am still a little angry, I feel sorry for whoever stole my things. I would gladly have let them borrow some if they needed it instead of them stealing it. But I am more grateful for the wonderful neighbors that I do have, the ones who have been true friends and have helped me in so many ways. God led me to this home and I believe He wants me to stay here.

Thank you, Lord, for the blessings you have given me. Thank you for the peace You give me even in bad situations. Help me to forgive those who have hurt me and help me to be a good example to them in these situations.

"This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother from your heart." Matthew 18:35

PRIORITIES IN OUR LIVES

We live in such a hectic world today. Family, work, social activities, church, home -so much to do and it seems like so little time. Sometimes it is hard to decide what we should do and what we should let slide. In other words, it is hard to determine what should be the priorities in our lives.

Obviously, we have to work. We need money to pay our bills, to put food on our tables, to put a roof over our heads.

We need to take care of our families. We need to get our children to school and to their activities. We need time to spend with our spouse or significant others.

We need to have time to spend with our friends. Friends are so important in our lives and it can be so easy to let friendships go by the wayside when we get so busy.

And does there ever seem to be an end to the chores - washing, vacuuming, ironing, cooking, gardening, and the list goes on and on!!

So much to do in life and so little time. Oh, wait, I forgot to mention God!! I really didn't forget - it just seems like sometimes we put Him last on our priority list. We get so busy that we just don't take the time to spend with God - we don't read our Bibles, don't go to church, don't pray. Seems like we get so tired and busy that it is just easier just to let our relationship with God be put to the bottom of our priority list.

In reality, God and our relationship with Him should be NUMBER ONE on our priority list. Absolutely nothing should come before God - not our spouse, our children, our work, NOTHING!! And even though it may be hard at times, when we do make God number one in our lives, we are truly blessed!! Our schedules and lives may still be hectic, we may still be stressed, but we are truly blessed!!

Lord, forgive us for not making you the most important part of our lives. Forgive us for placing others before You. Thank you for always being there for us and for never putting us to the bottom of Your list!!

"You shall have no other Gods before me." Exodus 20:3

WE HAVE NOTHING TO FEAR WHEN WE TRUST IN THE LORD

Fear is a horrible emotion. People have fears of many things - heights, water, spiders - just to name a few. My biggest fear is of fires. I had a friend who died in a house fire when I was only 12 years old, and I have never gotten over that. I am very afraid of fires in my house.

Last night this fear "flared" up. My daughter was drying her hair in the bathroom when the plug starting making noises and sparking. I did not know what to do, other than shut the fuse off. When I did that, however, it also shut off the refrigerator. I had a refrigerator full of food and didn't want it to go bad. So I turned the fuse back on, did not use the plug again, checked all my smoke detectors in my house, and basically stayed awake all night and prayed that my house would not catch on fire. I called the electrician the first thing this morning and he replaced the outlet. Things are fine now but it made me really think.

While we may never be able to completely get rid of our fears, no matter how rational or irrational they may be, we truly have nothing to fear when we trust in the Lord. He is always there for us no matter what. And while I was truly afraid last night and didn't sleep much, I did find some peace in praying to God to protect my daughter and myself through the night. Every time I would roll over and wake up, I would pray to God to protect us and then I was able to go back to sleep. It may have been a long night, but it certainly would have been a lot longer night had I not had His peace and comfort.

Lord, thank you for the peace that you give us through all situations. Thank you for the peace that passes all understanding.

The Lord is my light and my salvation - whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life - of whom shall I be afraid? Psalm 27:1

GOD IS ALWAYS THERE - EVEN WHEN WE ARE NOT!

Sometimes you just don't know, or appreciate, how much God has blessed you with. It And sometimes you feel so all alone in the world. It always seem that there is someone else who has a nicer house, nicer car, nicer clothes, etc. It is so easy to feel sorry for yourself and not appreciate what you have.

God has truly blessed me in so many, many, many ways. Lately I have not acted like I realize that or for that I ask His forgiveness. He has blessed me with a home that I have truly come to love, a daughter who is the most precious thing to me, friends who are like family. He has blessed me with fortunes beyond believe - not monetary but just the everyday things - there is truly nothing in life that I need or want. I pray for His forgiveness in not being more appreciative, for being envious of others, for wanting more or thinking I need more when I know in my heart that He will provide for all my needs. Even though I feel so all alone sometimes, I have come to realize that I am never alone. It has taken me a while to snap out of this funk and to listen to what He has to say, but I am grateful that He is still there and will always be there!

God has spoken to me in so many ways lately. One of the many ways is through people that I don't even know personally, that I have come into contact with through this devotional site. I thank God for those that He has brought into my life and I thank them enough for caring to let me know.

I praise you, God, for all your wondrous blessings in my life! I thank you for your forgiveness for my sins. I pray that You will help me to realize that although I don't have all the riches in the world that I have all I need in You! Praise You, God! Thank you for letting me know that I am never alone because I belong to you!

For none of us lives to himself alone and none of us dies to himself alone. If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. Romans 14:7,8

ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER YEAR - THANK YOU, LORD!!!

Today is a beautiful day outside - sunny and warm! A beautiful day to celebrate another year! Yes, it is my birthday! And to be honest, it is a birthday that I wasn't sure I would ever see! My doctors have never been overly pessimistic but at the same time, the longer my illness drags on, let's just say they are not overly encouraging about living to be 100!

That is why I am so grateful for every day that God has given me! He has blessed me in so many ways, and one of the greatest ways He has blessed me is getting old!!! Of course, I don't think I am old but my body has a tendency to disagree with me! But when I woke up this morning and saw how beautiful it was, I was so truly grateful! I have had such a beautiful day - lunch with my daughter, opening the presents she gave me, crying my eyes out when I read her card and the words she wrote, calls from friends, and looking forward to a dinner tonight hand cooked by my precious daughter. I can't promise that I will never complain again about getting old, but I do promise that I will be more and more grateful for the wonderful life He has given me!

Even though I know that one day I will spend eternity with the Lord and that when that day comes, I will have no more pain or suffering and I know that I don't fear that day, I do admit that I am not quite ready for it yet! There is so much I still want to accomplish here on this earth. But when God decides it is my time, I will truly rejoice!

Thank you, Lord, for another day and another year! Thank you for the knowledge that as I grow older and my body ages that there will come a time that I will be with You forever without any pain or sorrow, only joy and happiness!

Children's children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children. Proverbs 17:6

FRIENDS AND FAMILY

I went to Atlanta for a few days with my daughter over her spring break. To be honest, I was very nervous. I was afraid to see people I hadn't seen in several years - feared I had aged too much and looked too ill.

In hindsight, how ridiculous that fear was! I had a wonderful time. I got to spend Easter with two families that I care very much for and laughed more than I have in a very long time. It was so good to catch up on old times and make new memories! Although I did not get to see everyone I wanted to because I did not have a car while I was there, even those I did not see were in my heart when I thought about all the wonderful memories.

So much has changed in my life over the last 10 years. Nothing is like it was or like I thought it would be. But, it is how God had it planned, and it is perfect!

Sometimes I wonder how I will make it financially, how I will make it physically and emotionally, but God is always there and always gets me through. He has brought so many wonderful friends in my life who mean more to me than I could ever express, and they are my friends no matter how far apart we are.

I was so grateful that my daughter and her boyfriend let me ride to Atlanta with them because I couldn't have gone by myself. The trip truly helped me realize, once again, that I am right where I am supposed to be but that no matter how far away I am, I truly have friends and family in Atlanta and wonderful friends in West Virginia, and lots of places in between! I truly never have to be lonely - I do have "family"!

Thank you, Lord, for the family you have given me. Thank you for the gift of friends who are just like my family. You have truly blessed me with the most wonderful friends and family to help me through the hard times and to share the good times! I pray that I can be just as good a friend to them as they are to me!

God sets the lonely in families. Psalm 68:6

Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.

Happy Easter to all! I hope you all have a wonderful Easter weekend but among the wonderful food and the Easter egg hunts, remember that what we are truly celebrating is that Christ died on the cross for our sins but conquered death and rose again!! Praise God!! We all can have victory through Christ!

But thanks be to God!! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!

OH THE PAIN!!

My back has been hurting so much. The arthritis is getting worse I think. I can't even sleep in my bed - have to sleep in a chair and take pain medications just to get to sleep. I am way too young for this!!!

Oh, what a complainer I am, but when I truly think about it, I have absolutely nothing to complain about! I went to see the Passion Play at my church Sunday night and once again was reminded of the love Christ has for us and the pain that He went through on the cross for us, and He never complained! The physical pain He went through must have been unbearable! And the emotional pain knowing He was betrayed!

But He suffered all that pain for us - so that we will have eternal life. We will one day live a victorious life with no pain, no suffering, only joy and gladness!!

Lord, help me not to complain so much. The pain I feel is absolutely nothing compared to the pain You went through! The joy I feel in the Lord, however, is unlimited!!

Thank you, Lord, for forgiving us of our sins and for suffering on the cross for us so that we may have eternal life! Thank you for this Easter season!

This man was handed over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of the wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. Acts 2:23-24

I hope you enjoy this video - I think it is truly perfect for this Easter season

SO TRULY BLESSED!!!!

Sometimes it is so hard to be faithful. Sometimes the circumstances of life make you just want to give up. They make you wonder why you should be faithful and good if only to find yourself in the bad circumstances you are in - bad health, poor finances, lack of relationships.

But then you have one of those days like I have had today where everything seems to be right. I have to admit I haven't felt very well but that just hasn't seem to matter today. I have talked to a friend who is out of town whom I miss a lot when I don't see her. I have done some redecorating of my house - didn't spend much money, must changed things around and it truly feels like home. And I had a truly great financial surprise today - to my benefit. God has truly blessed me!!

While things over the last few years have not been easy, while keeping a good attitude has not always been easy, I have been so richly blessed and instead of giving up, my faith has truly grown stronger. I am a much better and stronger person than I was when this journey that I have been on began. I am so grateful for a God who never gives up on me and blesses me in ways that I don't even see at the time!!

Thank you, Lord, for all your blessings! Help me to keep growing in my faith and in Your word!

A faithful man will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished. Proverbs 28:20

PRAYER OF FAITH

God is my help in every need;
God does my every hunger feed;
God walks beside me, guides my way
Through every moment of the day.

I now am wise, I now am true,
Patient, kind, and loving too.
All things I am, can do, and be
Through Christ, the Truth that is in me.

God is my health, I can't be sick;
God is my strength, unfailing, quick;
God is my all; I know no fear,
Since God and love and Truth are here.

RISE AND SHINE AND GIVE GOD THE GLORY!!

"Rise and shine and give God the glory" is a refrain from a popular children's song. Each day as I awake to face the new day, I am so grateful - grateful to be able to wake up and complete whatever God wants me to do with my life for the day! I am grateful for the tasks and grateful for the enjoyments that He has given me, and grateful for another day to share God's love with others.

On those days where I may not feel as well, where times may be more troubled, I am grateful for the blessings that He has given me and that I can turn to the light of God within that illuminates my course.

Lord, help me to let my inner light shine and to share my joy with others in my life. Help me to rise and shine and give You the glory everyday!!

"Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven." Matthew 5:15-16

STAYING FOCUSED

Do you ever have trouble staying focused? Do you sometimes forget what you were doing or what you were about to say? Do you ever veer off track from your plans? I certainly do! Sometimes I just can't focus on what I want to do or what I should do. I plan things to do for the day - even write them down - but then I veer off and do something else and my original plans never get completed.

Jesus never had trouble staying focused. From the time he entered the world, he never lost sight of his goal, not even for a moment. He always stayed on track. He never forgot his goal was to save us all - to make sure that we all could spend eternity in heaven! He stayed focused until the end and after he took his drink of wine, he said "It is finished." John 19:30

Lord, help us stayed focused on our goals. Help us to not veer off track from what You want us to do with our lives. Help us stayed focused until the end when we can say "It is finished" and spend eternity with You!

OUR CONTENT IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN OUR COVER

One of my new hobbies is going to auctions and flea markets. I love to find great bargains either for my own home but mainly to resell. I went to a library and bought probably 100 books for a dime each and have begun reselling them. It is a fun way to make a few extra dollars. It is fun to see if items sell for what I anticipate or if I have bought a big flop!!

One of the things that has come to my attention is that a lot of people have begun buying antique books just for their covers, not for their content. Interior decorators buy them and use them to create a warm, old-world atmosphere in the homes of affluent people. They do not care what the content of the book is, just that the covers match the room's decor. These books are only for show.

Focusing on outward appearance may be a pleasing way to decorate a home, but it certainly is a very dangerous way to lead your life. Jesus reprimanded many religious leaders of His day because they did not practice what they preached. They were addicted to praise and self-importance. Instead of opening the doors of heaven to people, because of their actions, they shut the door in their faces. Jesus said of them: "Everything they do is for man to see." Matthew 23:5

God calls us to be people of inner substance, not just outward appearance. We need to show others the reality of God by an attitude of humility. In living for Jesus, our content is much more important than our cover.

The greatest among you will be your servant. For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. Matthew 23:11-12

LISTENING TO GOD

Listening is a magnetic and creative force. The people who listen to us are the ones we move toward , the ones who creates us, make us expand. It is easier for us to speak than it is for us to listen, though.

We should listen to others with affection as they are showing their souls to us. They are showing their true selves.

While we should be good listeners of others, we should listen most to God when He speaks to us. He is telling telling us His will for us, His dreams for us, His affection for us. He is showing who us who He really is and who He wants us to be, if we would only listen! He speaks to us in so many ways - through that quiet voice we hear, through events in our lives, through other people. We just need to listen and be aware of His presence and His word.

Lord, help us to move closer to You and to truly listen to You. Help us to hear what You say and what You want for our lives. It is so much easier to listen to ourselves and what we want, but help us to listen to You and heed Your will.

Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. Deuteronomy 30:19-20

OUR FINAL BILL

I opened my email today and almost had a heart attack! My daughter's electric bill was in my email and it was over $200!! She had actually had a credit for the last several months so it came as quite a shock!

Of course, I immediately suspected the bill was in error so I called the electric company. After having to punch several buttons and then holding for quite a while, my frustration level was growing by the minute! I finally spoke to a representative who seemed to be frustrated that I had called about my bill! Well, after several minutes and frustration on both of our parts, she finally was able to explain that this was a correct bill! The bills from the months before had been estimates and now reality had set in - this was for actual usage!

After praying for God to help me calm down and relax - after all, it is only money!! - I started thinking about how there are people who live their lives like this bill - estimating on how it will turn out and then when the "final bill" comes, they have to face reality!

God is the only one who can give us a wonderful "final bill", the best reality we could ever ask for! Our salvation can only be found in Him! We don't have to guess what our "final bill" will be as long as we have Jesus as our Lord and Saviour!

Thank you, Lord, for giving us a glorious "final bill"! Thank you for giving us the assurance of a blessed eternity with You!

Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12

HELP RID ME OF ANGER!!

What a week this has been! I have had to deal with several issues, both dealing with family, and both that I am very uncomfortable with.

Both of these issues have made me face feelings that I thought I had dealt with yet I obviously have not because they are weighing so heavy on my mind. I realize that in both situations I still harbor a great deal of bitterness, anger, and resentment.

I am trying so hard to rid myself of these feelings yet it is so hard. I know that I cannot do it on my own. I know that God wants to rid me of these feelings and He is the only one that can help me!

Lord, please help me to deal with these situations in the way You would have me to. Help me to get rid of any bitterness, anger, and resentment that I feel. Help me to love those who I feel these feelings toward and show compassion towards them. Help me to show them Your love!!

Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. Ephesians 4:31-2

READING HIS WORD DAILY

One of my New Year's resolutions was to read the Bible in its entirety. I had said before that I would do this but have to admit I never completed it. I started out like gangbusters this year - reading much more than the outline said to read daily. But then, once again, I stalled. I became discouraged and angry with myself.

Today when I was praying for God's word for my devotion today, He brought me to a book that is written by Billy Graham. In this book, Mr. Graham spoke of reading the Bible daily and the effect it has on our lives. After reading these words, I realized that many of the difficulties we have in life can be traced back to our lack of Bible reading and study. We shouldn't be content just to skim through a chapter merely to satisfy our conscience and say that we did it! We should thoroughly digest His word and hide it in our hearts! We are better off if we read a smaller portion daily but read it well than to just scan through a larger portion.

I realized I should not be discouraged if I don't read as much daily or if I don't truly understand it all. The Holy Spirit will enlighten me as I continue to read. Reading the Bible has a purifying effect on the body and mind.

Lord, help me to read your Word daily with an open heart and spirit. Help me not to be discouraged if I don't read as much as I think I should or if I don't understand it all. I know that You will lead me to the words You want me to read and to the understanding I need. Help me to grow in your Word daily.

How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. Psalm 119:9

A PASTOR WITH GUTS!!

I received this prayer in an email today and it really touched my heart. The words are so true! It was given by a minister in Kansas at the opening session of the Kansas senate. Instead of the general prayer they usually receive, Reverend Joe Wright delivered this awesome prayer. I hope that you receive the same blessing from it as I did!

'Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, 'Woe to those who call evil good,' but that is exactly what we have done.

We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values.

We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery.

We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare.

We have killed our unborn and called it choice.

We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable.

We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self esteem.

We have abused power and called it politics.

We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition.

We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression.

We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment.

Search us, Oh, God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and set us free. Amen!'

This pastor truly has courage to get up in front of the senate and pray these words! Lord, help us all to have the courage to stand up for what we know is right and for what You want us to do!

THE RIGHT WORDS TO SAY

A friend of mine is going through a really trying time. I don't even know all of the circumstances but I do know that she is hurting. I have tried so hard to be there for her through it all but sometimes I feel like I just don't say the right things, that I sound more like I am preaching.

Lord, give me the right words to say to her. Help me to let her know that even though I am not right beside her physically, I am beside her with my arms around her. Let me be able to show her how much I love her and how much You love her. Give me for the wisdom to know when to speak, what to say, and how to say it.

Lord, thank you for Your love, for your wisdom, for your patience. Help us to remember that no matter what we do, You are always there for us. Help us to show your love and patience to others when they are in need. Help us to always be a friend to others and not judge them, just love them.

A friend is a friend for all times, and a brother is born for adversity. Proverbs 17:17

INTEREST EQUALS INVESTMENT

I was talking to a friend the other day and she said that she was going to referee at her child's game the next day. I thought about how much I missed those days! My daughter is now grown, a senior in college, and doesn't need me to do things like referee her games anymore. I used to love being team mom, chaperone, substitute teacher, driver, whatever was needed! I felt like I was making an investment in my daughter's life. Now I never go to any softball games, cheerleading competitions, or field trips. Why? Because as much as I miss doing these things with my daughter, I don't have an interest in these activities anymore since she no longer participates.

The principle of investment is pretty clear. We have an interest in those things which we have an investment. And the greater the investment, the greater the interest! While this principle holds true for worldly matters, it certainly holds true for spiritual matters as well.

The more we invest of our time, our talents, our prayers, our money into the works of the church, our interest in bound to grow. If your interest in the church is waning, maybe you should invest more of your time and energy to it. God was so interested in us that He invested His only son, Jesus Christ in us!

Thank you, Lord, for being so interested and invested in our lives. Help us to become more interested in You and your word!

For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

WISDOM OR WEALTH???

My daughter is in search of a new car. She loves her truck and will never get rid of it but in light of the high gas prices we are facing, getting about 9 miles to a gallon is getting a little old! She wants to find a cheap car just to get her around her college campus.

I was looking in the AutoTrader for her today and there were lots of cars to choose from. But it is so hard to pick which one would be better for her! Would a Honda, Ford, Chevrolet be the best? Would an older car with low miles or a newer car with more miles? So many choices! Which one would be best??

We are constantly examining items in our lives trying to decide which is better - which is the best fruit to buy at the market, which is the best house to buy, which is the best pair of jeans? We are always having to make decisions and try to make these decisions based on what we believe is bettter. I can't imagine anyone every saying "I am sure this is the worst item, so I'll take it!"

The book of Proverbs is filled with comparisons that point us toward the right things to do in life. The book was written to give us knowledge and wisdom based on the fear of the Lord. Proverbs 1:2 says: "for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight;" and Proverbs 1:7 says: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.

We should always seek what is better in God's eyes! Proverbs 16:16 says: How much better to get wisdom than gold, to choose understanding than silver and Proverbs 16:19 says: Better to be lowly in spirit and among the oppressed than to share the plunder with the crowd. Some people may be able to be both wise and wealthy, but if forced to choose between the two, it is clear that we should choose wisdom.

When God's word shapes our thinking and guides our choices, we will discover that His way is always better!

Lord, help us to look for the signs that You give us that say "This is better!" Help us to make the better choices You would have us make in every aspect of our lives!

STAY STRONG IN THE LORD

Discouragement has set in. Have you ever felt that no matter how hard you try at something, it just doesn't seem to be working? You feel like you are doing what God is telling you to do, following His commands, yet your plans don't seem to be working?

My friend, this is the devil working in you. If you truly are following God's word and following what you truly believe He wants you to do, you will succeed. And God will always be with you. 2Chronicles 2:17 says: You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the Lord will give you, O Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the Lord will be with you.

God tells us He will give us success if we follow Him. 1Chronicles 23:12 says: Then you will have success if you are careful to observe the decrees and laws that the Lord gave Moses for Israel. Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged.

My friends, don't be discouraged if things are not exactly going how you had planned. God is with you and will take care of you. Stay strong in the Lord! Just remember the story of Job who was a very righteous man, who after losing everything and suffering from a terrible illness, never lost his trust in God. In Job 42:2, Job says: "I know that you can do all things; no plan of yours can be thwarted."

Don't let anything that you believe is God'w will for you change your plans! Don't let discouragement stop you from doing what you truly believe is God's plan for your life!

WHAT IS THE JUNK FOOD IN YOUR LIFE?

I was craving some chocolate today, as I had been for several days. I finally broke down and bought a candy bar. I did not eat it all - only about half of it. Granted, it was a king size bar, but I usually don't have even that much will power not to eat the whole thing!

The amazing thing was that as good as it tasted to me within minutes I was craving more. I had filled myself up with junk but was still not satisfied!

The world is a lot like junk food. We fill ourselves up with junk - whether it be certain music, tv shows, some sites on the internet, certain magazines, anything that does not honor God and takes our "appetites" away from Him. What takes your "appetite" away from God?

Lord, help us to be more aware of the "junk" in our lives. Help us to fill our appetites with things that honor You and will keep us satisfied!

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Matthew 5:6

TRUST IN GOD COMPLETELY

I am trying to make a major decision in my life and having trouble deciding what to do. I have been praying for answers as I try to make this decision. I have found a few steps that I think are helpful and I have tried to follow in this and every decision I make.

1. Get quiet. I find a place where it is quiet and I can relax and compose my thoughts.

2. I go to God for answers! Psalms 73:24 says: You guide me with your counsel and afterward you will take me into glory. God is the greatest counselor there is! His advice is better than any other advice you can receive. If you take His advice, how can you go wrong???

3. Truly listen to God's advice. You may not see anything in writing or actually hear someone talking, but you will hear His voice. God will tell you what to do. He may not tell you the minute you pray, He may not tell you tomorrow, but He will tell you what you need to hear when you need to hear it!!

4. Consciously condition your mind to allow correct thinking - the thinking of Christ. Phillipians 2:5 says: Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus. Think of what Jesus would do in the situation you are in.

5. Be patient. Don't hurry any decision. Wait until you truly hear what God is trying to tell you.

6. Thank God for giving you the right answer because He truly is giving you the right answer! You will have a peace about you when you have followed God's advice and done as He has told you to do.

7. When you have received the answer to your problem from God, trust it completely! Do not doubt the answer. Do not look back and think about what you might have done. Take the answer with faith! Know that you have sought God's advice and that you can trust Him completely! Know that God will see you through all your problems!

Although I sometimes have difficulty making decisions and not looking back and questioning myself, I do find that when I go to God for answers and follow His advice completely and without doubt, things truly work out for the best!

WHAT ANGERS YOU?

Have you ever known a person who is always angry about something? It may be that the car in front of them is going to slow or that the drive-thru at McDonalds didn't get their order right or that the checkout lane at the grocery store is moving way too slow. These minor incidents can ruin some people's day. You wonder what is going to make them angry or upset next!

But if we are truthful with ourselves, not only do we know people like this, we ourselves can find ourselves upset over things that don't really matter. We don't like this trait in others so it probably is not a great trait in ourselves, either!

If you have to be upset or angry about something, why not be upset over things that really matter instead of getting angry and upset over trivial things. Things like people who are hungry and have no food, people who are homeless and have no place to lay their head at night, people who are sick and have no insurance or money to be able to go to the doctor, people who are dying without the knowledge of Jesus Christ!!

Lord, instead of being angry and upset over trivial things, help us to adjust our priorities and to make a difference in the lives of others in ways that really matter. Help us to lead others to you! Help us to be patient with others and control our anger and show others your love.

My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. James 1:19-20

JESUS MAKES US NEW AGAIN!

Every four to six weeks, I am forced to "wash the gray right out of my hair"! Today as I was completing this task that makes me feel so old, I began thinking of how lucky we are that Jesus washed our sins away when He died on the cross for us and makes us new again. All we need to do is ask Jesus into our lives and our sins are washed away! It doesn't mean we won't sin again - none of us are perfect. But it does mean that Jesus is always with us. We do need to ask Jesus for forgiveness for our sins but He will always be with us.

Unlike washing the gray out of my hair that makes me feel so old, Jesus makes me feel so new! Every day is a new day with Jesus! Every day is sweeter than the day before! I can see the gray hairs that I hate and wash away. But even though I cannot see Jesus, He fills me with such joy and peace!

Thank you, Lord, for washing away my sins and making me new again!

Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible joy, for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls. 1Peter 1:8-9

THE MANY GIFTS OF LOVE

Being a Christian comes with many responsibilities. One of these responsibilities is to love one another. Our Christian conduct is proof as to whether we love each other. By loving our fellow human beings and showing our love, we show that we belong to Jesus Christ.

It is not always easy to love our fellow human beings, however! We can become jealous, resentful, irritable, selfish, mean spirited. We can hold grudges against others. None of these traits show love for each other.

But there are many gifts that come from love. Some of these gifts are forgiveness, patience, kindess, justice, loyalty, truth, honesty, and belief in a person no matter what.

Sometimes it is much easier to "not" love others, but in order to follow God's word, we must love one another!

Lord, help us to love one another, no matter the circumstances. Help us to not be jealous, spiteful, mean spirited, resentful. Help us to be patient, loving, forgiving towards one another. Thank you, Lord, that You love us no matter our faults!

So I am now giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. John 13:34

LET IT RAIN!

It is pouring down rain today with thunderstorms. I am disappointed because I had some things I wanted to do but now don't feel like going out at all with the weather.

But when it rains like this, I realize that even though my plans may be changed because of the weather, I am truly blessed. I have a roof over my head that keeps me warm and dry. God has truly blessed me. I have a bed that I can curl up in at night and feel safe and warm. I have food that nourishes my body. I have clothes to wear.

And when I think about it, there are certainly things I needed to do inside my home today that I would have put off if it had not rained. So thank you, Lord, for the rain and for changing my plans!

Thank you, Lord, for the beautiful rain. Thank you the roof over my head that you have given me to protect me from the rain. Thank you for all the many blessings you have given me! Forgive me for complaining when the weather doesn't fit my plans - it fits your plans - and Your plans are perfect!

God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect. Hebrews 11:40

KEEP THE FORK - THE BEST IS YET TO COME!

A friend of mine sent this to me today. I haven't seen her in so very long but she is so close to my heart. This really touched me and I hope it does you, too!

A Woman and a Fork

There was a young woman who had been diagnosed with a terminal illness and had been given three months to live. So as she was getting her things "in order," she contacted her Pastor and had him come to her house to discuss certain aspects of her final wishes.

She told him which songs she wanted sung at the service, what scriptures she would like read, and what outfit she wanted to be buried in. Everything was in order and the Pastor was preparing to leave when the young woman suddenly remembered something very important to her. "There's one more thing," she said excitedly. "What's that?" came the Pastor's reply. "This is very important," the young woman continued. "I want to be buried with a fork in my right hand."

The Pastor stood looking at the young woman, not knowing quite what to say.
That surprises you, doesn't it?" the young woman asked. "Well, to be honest, I'm puzzled by the request," said the Pastor.

The young woman explained. "My grandmother once told me this story, and from that time on I have always tried to pass along its message to those I love and those who are in need of encouragement. In all my years of attending socials and dinners, I always remember that when the dishes of the main course were being cleared, someone would inevitably lean over and say, 'Keep your fork.' It was my favorite part because I knew that something better was coming... like velvety chocolate cake or deep-dish apple pie. Something wonderful, and with substance!' So, I just want people to see me there in that casket with a fork in my hand and I want them to wonder "What's with the fork?" Then I want you to tell them: "Keep your fork the best is yet to come."

The Pastor's eyes welled up with tears of joy as he hugged the young woman good-bye. He knew this would be one of the last times he would see her before her death. But he also knew that the young woman had a better grasp of heaven than he did. She had a better grasp of what heaven would be like than many people twice her age, with twice as much experience and knowledge. She KNEW that something better was coming.

At the funeral people were walking by the young woman's casket and they saw the cloak she was wearing and the fork placed in her right hand. Over and over, the Pastor heard the question, "What's with the fork?" And over and over he smiled. During his message, the Pastor told the people of the conversation he had with the young woman shortly before she died He also told them about the fork and about what it symbolized to her. He told the people how he could not stop thinking about the fork and told them that they probably would not be able to stop thinking about it either. He was right.

So the next time you reach down for your fork let it remind you, ever so gently, that the best is yet to come. Friends are a very rare jewel, indeed. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed. They lend an ear, they share a word of praise, and they always want to open their hearts to us. Show your friends how much you care. Remember to always be there for them, even when you need them more. For you never know when it may be their time to "Keep their fork." Cherish the time you have, and the memories you share... being friends with someone is not an opportunity but a sweet responsibility.

Thank you, Lord, for my friends that I cherish so much! And thank you, Lord, for the blessed assurance that the best is yet to come!!

But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring under his control, will tranform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body. Phillipians 3:20-21

THE PROBLEM WITH PAIN!

The problem with pain is that it comes in many forms. Physical pain, emotional pain, financial pain. It can test us to our limits. Pain can overwhelm us at times and plunge us into deep discouragement and despair. We often wonder if we can handle the pain any longer - it is there in the morning, at night - unrelentless pain!

It truly is possible to handle such pain. Sometimes we are so overwhelmed by the pain it seems that we can't even pray. But God is present, close and caring, even if we are unable to ask for His help. He can and will get us through the pain.

God will provide friends to encourage us and pray for us. He will provide doctors and medicines to help heal us. He will give us the faith and strength to conquer whatever we face! In our worst moments, shattered by pain in body, mind and spirit, God has promised not to leave us alone or without comfort.

Thank you, Lord, that in the midst of the pain You are always there to give us the strength to get us through the pain. Thank you for the friends, the doctors, and the courage You give us!

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26

ACCEPTING GOD'S PLAN

There was once a day when I had a major career. I was a practice manager for a physician. I loved my job. I loved working with the patients, with the doctor, with the other staff. I have to admit I loved being in charge and making major decisions for the physician, staff, and the practice.

Then one day, I lost it all. I became ill and unable to work. I felt like I lost my identity. Yes, I was a mother, which was and is my favorite job, but I had put so much into my career I felt lost without it. My daughter had even worked with me. I felt so in limbo.

And I felt guilty. I was relatively young and couldn't work anymore! And it didn't look like I would ever be able to work again. Well, God had different plans! While I don't work in an office anymore and I really don't make a salary anymore, I have became active again and it feels great! I am learning that I am able to write articles for different people. I buy and sell items on ebay and at flea markets. I can volunteer my time. None of these are the major career I had, but if I admit to myself, I am much happier! Sure, I wish I hadn't become ill, but God had a reason and one day I will understand it. Right now, I am just trying to follow His commands and do what He wants me to do with my life.

We may not always end up doing what we think we will in life, but if we follow God's plan, even if we don't understand it or like it at the time, things will work out! God always has our best in mind!

Thank you, God, for my life. While things may not have turned out quite the way I had planned, my life has turned out exactly how You had planned and I praise you for that! Help me to continue to accept the changes in my life and open my eyes to what you want me to do with my life!

A man can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in his work. This too, I see, is from the hand of God. Exclesiastes 2:24

NO GREATER JOY

I was just going to run a few errands today and then come home. But my daughter called and we decided to have lunch together. I love spending time with her. With her school schedule, work schedule and social life, our time together is less which makes it even more precious!

I am having to realize that she is growing up (she is actually grown up!), and I am having to let go. I know that we will always be close, but she has a life of her own now - and I am so proud of her.

She has done so well in school. She knew from the beginning what she wanted to do with her career, and she has never wavered. She has worked so hard in school to be able to obtain her goals in the future. I am so proud!

She has worked hard at her job. She knows I don't have a lot of money and she works hard to have the extra cash she needs.

She is always there to take care of me when I need help. Sometimes I can't drive or do much around the house. She is always there to help me and support me.

But what I am most proud of is where her heart is. Although she doesn't attend church every Sunday, I know her heart is with Jesus. She is compassionate, caring, and loving. That is what makes me the most proud!! I don't know if she will read this today or not, but I know she knows how proud of her I am. I thank God everyday for her!

Lord, thank you for my child! She is truly a blessing to me! Even if we don't always see eye to eye on things, Lord, please help me to always show her how proud of her I am and how much of a blessing she is to me!

I have no greater joy than to hear my children are walking in the truth. 3John:5

REAPING WHAT YOU SOW

Getting older is a fact of life. It isn't always fun but it is just a fact of life. HOW we age is our choice. Some people think that growing older means you will get grouchy and ill-tempered. Some people grow old gracefully. How we grow old is our choice.

Just because people are getting older doesn't mean they have to get cranky and irritable. Aging doesn't have to make us short-tempered and hypercritical. It is more likely that as we age we become what we have been becoming all along.

Paul wrote in Galatians 6:7-10 - Do not be deceived. God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

I believe these verses tell us that those who think only of themselves will reap a harvest of misery in themselves and others. On the other hand, those who love God and care for others are sowing seeds that will reap a harvest of joy.

Which way do you want to grow? What type of harvest are you sowing?

THIS IS THE DAY!

This is the beginning of a new day.
God has given me this day to use as I will.
I can waste it or use it for good,
but what I do today is important
because I am exchanging a day of my life for it.
When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever,
leaving in its place something that I have traded for it
I want it to be gain and not loss; good and not evil;
success and not failure; in order that I shall not
regret the price I have paid for it.

This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Psalm 118:24

GOD'S WONDERFUL PLAN WILL PREVAIL!!

Happiness is a wonderful state of mind and a wonderful state of heart. God, I thank you for blessing my life with many happy times and wonderful experiences. But I am even more grateful to you for the deep and abiding joy that abides in my spirit, even when circumstances have made happiness disappear. For even in the most difficult of times, Lord, the blessings of your joy can bring lift me up and bring a song to my heart. I am always reminded that you have a wonderful plan for my life and your wonderful plan for my life will prevail!

"For I know the plans for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11

TRUE FRIENDS

Oh, the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person; having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but to pour them all out, just as they are, chaff and grain together, knowing that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and then, with the breath of kindness, blow the rest away.

--George Eliot

Do you have such a friend? Are you such a friend??

Thank you, Lord, for the dear friends I have, both near and far, who make me feel safe and loved. Help me to be a true friend to others.

A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Proverbs 18:24

SOLID ROCK OR SINKING SAND?

There was a picture in the paper today of a home whose foundation was sliding down a hill. The owners were about to lose their home because of the foundation they had built on was sinking! Coincidentally (although I doubt seriously if it was truly a coincidence!) when I was reading my Bible today I was reading in Matthew where Jesus talks about the wise and foolish builders.

In Matthew 7:24-27, Jesus says "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who build his house on the sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."

Is your house built on a firm foundation or is it on sinking sand? Are you a wise or foolish builder? Can you withstand any storm that life brings your way? Build your house on a firm foundation with God!

One of the best old time hymns is Solid Rock which was written in 1832 by Edward Mote. These lyrics are perfect for this devotional!

SOLID ROCK

On Christ the Solid Rock
(Edward Mote, William Bradbury)

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name

When darkness veils his lovely face
I rest on his unchanging grace
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil

On Christ the solid rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand
All other ground is sinking sand

His oath, his covenant, his blood
Supports me in the whelming flood
When all around my soul gives way
He then is all my hope and stay

When he shall come with trumpet sound
Oh may I then in him be found
Dressed in his righteousness alone
Faultless to stand before the throne

WHERE IS YOUR HOME?

I have been trying to decorate my home a little more lately. While I don't own my place, it has become my home and I believe God truly led me here. It is the perfect size for me, the perfect price for me, just the perfect place for me right now. There are some things I would change but for now, it is the perfect fit.

But I started thinking that my home is not found in the house where I live, nor in the community I live or the state where I grew up. I could travel far and wide and never settle down (seems like that is what I did for awhile!), I could lose all my belongings, I could say goodbye to those I love most, and still my home would not be lost. How can this be?

It is true because the home is where the heart is and my heart is truly with God. He is my truest home. No matter where I have lived, He has always been my truest home. I can always come home to God.

Where is your true home?

My people will live in peaceful dwelling places, in secure homes, in undisturbed places of rest. Isaiah 32:18

NEW CREATURES IN GOD

Have you ever heard the story of the farmer who brought his pig into his home, washed him, polished his hooves, put some perfume on him, put a ribbon around his neck and brought him into his living room. The pig looked, and smelled, wonderful! He made a wonderful pet - until the door was left opened! Then the pig went outside as fast as he could and jumped into the first mud puddle he could find? Why? Because he was still a pig!! Nothing the farmer could do on the outside could change who the pig was on the inside. He was still a pig!!

We are like this pig. You can clean us up, put nice clothes on us, make us smell good, put us on the front row at church. But unless we are born again and have Jesus in our heart - we are just like that pig. Our nature has not changed and our true colors will come out. We need to be born again and have Jesus in our heart for our nature to be changed!

Thank you, Lord, for changing us, for cleaning us up and for giving us a new nature!!
Thank you for making us new creatures!

But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior. Titus 3:4-6

THANK YOU, JESUS

We have been so used to thinking of giving thanks for the blessings in our lives that we find it hard to think in terms of being grateful for God's gifts that are hidden in experiences that we try to avoid.

We need to give thanks to God for the opposition we meet, the resistance that has forced us to put forth our best efforts, and the disputes that have compelled us to re-examine our arguments and eliminate the flaws.

We need to praise God for the struggles that have made us grow, the defeats that have made us humble, the losses that have made us cautious, and the dangers that have kept us alert.

We need to thank God for the risks we have had to take that have shown us hidden strengths we didn't know we had.

We need to be grateful for the enemies we have made, for to have no enemies means we have not taken any issue with the wrong, defied evil, or rallied to the defense of the oppressed.

We need to be grateful for our critics who tell us the truth about ourselves.

But above all, we need to thank God that good has come out of evil, that struggles we would have preferred to avoid have turned into blessings, that because we are confident and secure in his love and goodness we have found strength and courage to face whatever comes - to run the race that is set before us.

Thank you, Lord, for all of your blessings, even those we don't see as blessings as the time. Thank you for the strength you give us to run the race you have set before use.

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day - and not only to me, but alto to have who have long for his appearing. 2 Timothy 4:6-8

GOD'S TALENT SEARCH

Another season of American Idol has begun. Simon, Randy, and Paula are crossing the country looking for new talent, the next American Idol. To many of this generation, this show may seem like a new concept in entertainment. In actuality, it is hardly a new idea. In the 1980's there was Star Search, in the 1970's there was the Gong Show, and probably the original of these genre was Ted Mack's Original Amateur Hour. It really has been on ongoing theme - looking for the next great talent!

We are always searching for fame and fortune. But the true timeless search is God's own search of hearts that are available for His work in the world. He is not seeking the most qualified or the most talented. He is seeking those who are available, willing, and dependable. In those lives, He will show Himself to be strong and He will be glorified.

All God wants to know is "Are you available?" He will take care of the rest!

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying "Whom shall I send? and who will go for us?" And I said, "Here I am. Send me!" Isaiah 6:8

HAS GOD GONE ON WINTER VACATION??

It is so cold outside! This past week with cold and snow, it is hard to imagine that winter will ever be gone and springtime will ever be here again!

Sometimes our lives feel like that. Things are so bad - we have no money, trouble with relationships, our kids are having problems. Where is God? Will He ever be back again? Has He taken off and left us for the winter?

God NEVER leaves us! No matter how bad things may seem, God is always there for us. As is says in 2 Corinthians 4:7-9: "But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show this all surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned, struck down, but not destroyed."

If you are having a "winter" day, remember that this is the time to keep talking to God. He never leaves you or goes on vacation for the winter! He is always beside you! This winter weather is only temporary. God is eternal!

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

TEN EXCUSES TO NEVER WASH

1. My parents always forced me to when I was little.
2. People who wash are hypocrites and think they are cleaner than others.
3. There are so many different brands of soap, I'd never know which one to use.
4. I used to wash, but is was the same thing every time and I got bored with it,
so I quit washing.
5. None of my friends wash.
6. Washing is a scam that is perpetuated on people by soap companies who are just
trying to make money.
7. I'm still young. When I get older and need it more, I'll start washing.
8. I'm so busy I can't find the time to wash.
9. I know some people who are regular washers, and they once hurt my feelings,
so I'm not going to wash anymore.
10.It's not like I've totally quite washing. I still wash on special occasions
like Easter and Christmas.

Now, would you like to hear ten excuses why people don't go to church??
1. See #1 above.
2. See #2 above.
3. See #3 above.
4. See #4 above.
5. See #5 above.
6. See #6 above.
7. See #7 above.
8. See #8 above.
9 See #9 above.
10.See #10 above.

There is only one way to wash away our sins and that is through the blood of Jesus. And we need to remember that we need to keep clean "between the ears", not just behind the ears!!!

Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children, and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Ephesians 5:1-2

The Perfect "Christian"

I have a friend I want to tell you about. We were friends for 17 years. He was a true friend, always there to share the good times and the bad. He never left my side. In all the years I knew him, he never said a bad word, never drank or used drugs, never gossiped, never lied. Sounds like I am describing the perfect person, a good "Christian", doesn't it? In fact, I am talking about my dog, Barkley.

We need to realize that being a "Christian" involves more than refraining from evil. It involves an active pursuit of doing good. And furthermore, no matter how "good" we are, we are not Christians until we come to a relationship with Christ and obey the gospel.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16

OPEN THE EYES OF MY HEART

Sometimes in our lifes we become so stuck in the same routine. We get up at the same time, go to work or whatever we do during the day, come home, sit on the couch and watch TV. Not much ever changes. We become complacent and content with the way things are.

But sometimes God wants to shake things up! He wants to change some things in our lives. But we become so used to the way things are, whether that is good or bad, that we close our eyes and our hearts to what God wants to do in our lives.

Recently, God has been speaking to me about some things He wants to change in my life. I have been guilty of having a hard heart towards these changes. In fact, I totally ignored what God was saying and pretended I didn't hear Him. Well, I woke up this morning and He was telling me loud and clear! I realized I truly need to soften my heart and open my eyes to what He wants to do in my life! God truly wants what is best for us if we will only listen to him and follow Him. While change may not be fun at times - it is easier just to keep things the way they are, if God is telling us to change things then we need to listen! Certain things have been the same in my life for a long time and while I won't say that I am really ready for change - it is scary - I will say that I am excited about what God has in store for me, even though I don't have a clue what it is! I am putting my trust in Him!

Life really is full of changes but the one thing that never changes is Jesus Christ!

Lord, I pray that you will soften my heart and open my eyes to what You want to do in my life. Thank you for always wanting the best for me and for never giving up on me, even when I don't always listen to You.

He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end. I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live. That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in his toil - this is the gift of God. Ecclesiastes 3:11-13

STRIPPING AWAY THE LAYERS

I was trying to decide what to do today. I am becoming bored since I am not driving much yet since I got out of the hospital. I decided to finish stripping my bedroom furniture. This furniture was my mother's when she was young and I have had it for many years. Last summer I stripped the dresser and chest of drawers and it turned out great. It was not easy work because the furniture had been painted and stained many times through the years. It had been used as a makeup dresser, changing table, desk - all painted different colors. It was a lot of work but well worth it.

The makeup dresser has a stool that goes with it that as of right now is still the last color we had painted it for my daughter - bright yellow!! Doesn't exactly fit in with the decor of my bedroom so I am going to finish stripping it and then stain it and the set will be complete!

This all makes me think of our relationship with Jesus Christ. We go to him with so many layers that should be stripped away - our sinful layers. But He looks beyond those layers and loves us despite our sins. He knows what we can be and what we are created to be. All we need to do is let him strip those layers away from us and we can become the beautiful creation that God intends for us to be!!

Lord, thank you for looking beyond my sinful layers and stripping them away. Help me to become the creation that you intended me to be!

But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy. " 1 Peter 1:15-16

COMMIT TO GOD

In today's society, lasting commitment seems to be fast becoming nonexistent. Couples commit to each other through marriage but then divorce. People no longer really commit to jobs or careers because they fear being laid off or fired so they always search for better positions. Going to church is too much of a commitment to others - who wants to get up early on a Sunday morning??

God is always committed to us. And He expects commitment from us. The following verses show what God expects us to commit and trust to Him:

1. God expects us to commit Ourselves:

He trusts in the Lord; let the Lord rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him. Psalm 22:8.

2. God expects us to commit our Burdens to Him.

Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall. Psalm 55:22

3. God expects us to commit our Souls to Him.

So then, those who suffer according to God's will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good. 1 Peter 4:19

4. God expects us to commit our Way to Him.

Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him. Psalm 37:5

5. God expects us to commit our Cause to Him.

When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. 1 Peter 2:23

6. God expects us to commit our Works to Him.

Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed. Proverbs 16:3

Lord, let me be as committed to You as You are to me. Help me to do all that I do for Your glory. I thank you, Lord, for Your faithfulness and unchanging commitment.

SET FOR LIFE

I spend a lot of time on the internet and have numerous email accounts. I have had to come up with numerous passwords. One of my passwords is "Setforlife". I used this on one of the sites that I make money by reading emails. I used "setforlife", kiddingly thinking I would be set for life with all the money I would make off of this site! While I do make a few dollars from it, I am certainly not set for life financially from it!

But I am Set For Life through my relationship with Jesus! It doesn't matter how much money I have or don't have - I am set for life! I have all the important things in life - God always meets my needs! Even though I am guilty of worrying, I never need to worry about anything because God always meets my needs and answers my prayers. He may not answer my prayers in the way or in the timing I want, but He always does in His time - which is perfect. I have never wanted for food, clothing, a roof over my head. Through all the hard times with health, finances, etc., God has ALWAYS been there and provided more than enough!

Lord, I thank You for always being there for me and making me SET FOR LIFE. Thank you for the people you have put in my life who are always there for me - who have helped me financially and emotionally. Thank You for always meeting my needs. Forgive me for ever worrying about things and not having the faith at times to know that You will always meet my needs.

Then Jesus said to his disciples: "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food and the body is more than clothes." Luke 12:22-23

DOGS KNOW EVERYTHING

A sick man turned to his doctor, as he was preparing to leave the examination room and said, "Doctor, I am afraid to die. Tell me what lies on the other side."

Very quietly the doctor said, "I don't know."

"You don't know? You, a Christian man, do not know what is on the other side?" stated the man.

The doctor was holding the handle of the door. On the other side of which came a sound of scratching and whining. He hopened the door. A dog sprang into the room and leaped on him with an eager show of gladness.

Turning to the patient, the doctor said, "Did you notice my dog? He's never been in this room before. He didn't know what was inside. He knew nothing except that his master was here, and when the door opened, he sprang in without fear. I know little of what is on the other side of death, but I do know one thing: I know my Master is there, and that is enough. And, when the door opens, I will pass through it with gladness, but with no fear - if I know HIM!"

- Taken from Thoughts of Others by J. Key Powell

Lord, I thank You that because I do know you that there is no fear on what is on the other side of the door. I do know that there will be no pain, no tears, no sorrow - only joy, health, riches. Thank you, Lord! Help me to share You with others so that they too will know no fear!!

Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies, and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this.?" John 11:25-26

DELIGHT ONLY IN HIM

There are times when we all worry about our appearance. We are too fat, too skinny, too many wrinkles, the list goes on and on. I certainly worry too much about my appearance. Since I have been ill and because of the medications, my appearance has changed dramatically. It has made me very insecure.

Today as I as praying about what to write in my devotion, I came across this verse that I thought was perfect for how I was feeling about myself:

"His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor his delight in the legs of man; the Lord delights in those who fear him,who put their hope in his unfailing love." Psalm 147:10-11

This verse really struck me. I deal not only with worrying about my weight but about the fact that sometimes I don't walk well, my legs don't work well at times. I worry about how others view me when I walk slowly or have a funny gait. I realized that I am sometimes more worried about others opinions than I am about God's!

God does not care how I look or how I walk. He cares about what is in my heart!

God has given me a wonderful daughter and wonderful friends who don't care about anything but the person I am - not what I look like! I am so grateful to Him for that!

Let us all remember that God loves us and what us to be happy! We all come in different shapes and sizes, different health issues, some people have more finances than others. We are all different. Our worth is not based on our outer appearance. God loves each of us - no matter what! He just wants us to live for Him and put our hope in Him!!

Lord, while I may not have perfect health or the perfect body, I do have the perfect life You have given me and I praise You for that! Thank you for the friends and family You have given me who love me! Thank you for Your love! Let me always put my hope and faith in You!

GOD HEALS!!

It has been a stressful few days. I had not been feeling well for about a week but went to church Sunday morning anyway. Unfortunately, things got worse during the service and when I got up to leave, I ended up passing out. Luckily, there were numerous people there to help me. They called 911 and got me to the hospital and contacted my daughter for me. Not exactly how I wanted to meet more people at church, but I am so truly grateful for their help, their compassion, and their prayers.

The doctors immediately wanted to put me on the ventilator again, but I refused. I just did not want to go through that again unless absolutely necessary. So they put me in ICU and started treatments which required putting a catheter in my leg. Unfortunately, that did not go well and was extremely painful. But they finally got the catheter in and began treatments. I usually have 5 of these treatments over a period of 10 days. However, the catheter was so painful I could not tolerate it and had it pulled out after only two treatments. I was frustrating several doctors!!

But the amazing thing is that it usually takes at least 3 of these treatments for me to tell a difference. This time, however, I began to feel a little better after 1 treatment and even more so after the 2nd treatment. They even let me go home today! God is truly awesome! In addition, I had a doctor who is a strong Christian, not afraid to share his faith with his patients, and truly helped me mentally! It is awesome how God puts people in our lives just when we need them!

While this week has not been fun, it has once again proved to me what an awesome God we serve! By all medical standards, I should have been on the ventilator yet here I am 4 days later writing this. Praise God!!

For I will restore health to you and your wounds I will heal, says the Lord.
Jeremiah 30:17a

GOD'S WINDSHIELD WIPERS

It is kind of gloomy outside today. Looks like it is going to rain, but at least it is warmer! I was praying and trying to decide on my devotion today when I came across this story that seemed to fit the weather! I am not sure who wrote the original story, but I love it!

WINDSHIELD WIPERS

One rainy afternoon I was driving along one of the main streets of town, taking those extra precautions necessary when the roads are wet and slick. Suddenly my son spoke up from his buckled-in position in the back seat. "Mom, I'm thinking of something." This announcement usually meant he had been pondering some fact for a while and was now ready to expound all this his 7-year-old mind had discovered. I was anxious to hear.

"What are you thinking?" I asked. "The rain," he began, is like sin, and the windshield wipers are like God, wiping our sins away."

After the chill bumps raced up my arms, I was able to respond. "That's really good, Matthew." Then my curiosity broke in. How far would this little boy take this revelation?

So I asked..."Do you notice how the rain keeps on coming? What does that tell you." Matthew didn't hesitate one moment to answer: "We keep on sinning, and God keeps on forgiving us."

Just like the mother in this story, I got goosebumps when I read this story. This 7-year-old child had such a wonderful answer to the rain and windshield wipers! Let us all thank God that He is like windshield wipers, continually wiping our sins away!

Thank you, Lord, that You always wipe away our sins no matter how hard it rains! Thank you that by your grace we are forgiven. Thank you for the wonderful thoughts of children who help us remember your wonderful glory!

---This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. Romans 3:22-24

A MAN OF LEADERSHIP

Everyone, except West Virginians, said it couldn't be done! The WVU Mountaineers could not possibly beat the Oklahoma Sooners in the Fiesta Bowl. Especially not with all the distractions of the once beloved head coach leaving in the circumstances he left. How could our players possibly keep the focus on the bowl game??

Well, they DID keep their focus and they DID win!! They shocked the nation and won 48-28!! They looked fantastic! They made WVU and the entire state of West Virginia proud!

How did they do it? Of course they are an extremely talented team! I won't even begin to list all the talented players they have! But I believe above all was the leadership they had! Bill Stewart, who had been named Interim Coach, proved to be an outstanding coach! He made terrific calls and just coached a great game. But what I was most impressed by was the leadership he was showing! When watching him on the sidelines, you could tell that he truly cared about his players. There were many hugs, many pats on the helmets, many talks to his players. And at the end of the game, there were many tears - from coaches, from players and from fans.

In listening to the interviews after the game, all of the players talked about Coach Stew and how they hoped that he would be named Head Coach. Their wish came true today when Coach Stew was named Head Coach of the Mountaineers! I truly believe that this is a day to celebrate! Coach Stewart truly has a gift of leadership and compassion, and I believe that he will bring the leadership that is so desperately needed for this team. I believe that he is a man to be respected and that he will respect his team, the university, and the state.

God has given us each gifts, whether it be leadership, serving, mercy, encouragement, compassion. While we may not all be coaches, let us all try to use the gifts that God has given us. Let us all honor our commitments and be compassionate to others. Let us show mercy when needed and let us all be generious whether it be with our time, our finances, our hearts.

Lord, thank you for the different gifts and talents you have given each of us. Let us use these gifts and talents to honor You and to show You to others.

"We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man's gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach, if it is encouraging, , let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully." Romans 12:6-8
